News from Panther Headquarters
April 2018
From the desk of the Principal...
Hello Panther Families –
The final grading period of 2017-2018 is now upon us. With ISTEP Part I completed, we look forward to delving more into engaging lessons that tie all of this year’s learning together prior to a series of assessments in May, including ISTEP Part II online from Tuesday, 4/17 – 4/24.
We have now collected all of the online Course Selection Sheets from 6th and 7th grade students and are putting together the Master Schedule of courses. A message to view your student’s course selections for next year will be sent via Skylert in early May. This is not a finalized schedule with periods and teachers, just a list of the courses that were selected. If you notice that something is incorrect, please contact your respective counselor for 18-19 (Lauren Isaacs-7th or Lois Valasek-8th for next year). For our current 5th graders moving to 6th grade, student schedules for next year will reflect the natural progression of their current courses. 6th grade team assignments and final schedules for next year’s 7th and 8th graders at HSE Intermediate & Junior High will be available at Panther Preview on August 1st.
This last quarter will be fast paced and filled with lots of activities, including year-end celebrations and awards ceremonies (last week of school). We will continue to emphasize our PAWS Expectations to ensure we maintain the safe educational environment we have come to know throughout the year. We appreciate all that you do to ensure your child is ready to learn each and every day. Thank you again for all of the support!
Respectfully,
Tim A. Mankin

ISTEP Testing Dates to Note. Mark your calendars to ensure your child is in attendance these testing periods.
ISTEP+ Part 2 - April 16 - May 4, 2018
It is extremely important that your child be in attendance and on time during these testing days. Please assist us by ensuring that your child is well rested and eats a healthy breakfast. Also, it would be advantageous to reschedule any appointments you have scheduled during these days. Thank you in advance for your assistance with this testing process.
Withdrawing Your Student. If your child will be withdrawing from Hamilton Southeastern Intermediate / Junior High School, any time PRIOR to the last day of school, you MUST notify the guidance office at least two days in advance of your child’s last day. Withdrawal forms prepared by the guidance office, will need to be signed by the parent/ guardian. Once all administrative items are completed, a copy of the withdrawal form, current grades and schedule will be given to the student to provide to their future school for enrollment.
8TH GRADERS ATTENDING A PRIVATE SCHOOL NEXT YEAR. If your child will be attending a private school for 9th grade year, you MUST notify the HIJH guidance office AND sign a withdrawal form. HSEHS requires that we forward these withdrawal slips to them at the end of this school year. If one is NOT completed, you will be phoned by the high school to come in to sign their form before they will release records to your new school. Thank you in advance for helping us with this.

Messages from the Nurse
2018-2019 (Current 5th graders). It is never too soon to start planning for the next school year. All students who will be in 6th grade for the 2018-2019 school year are required to receive immunizations for Tdap and meningococcal. NEW for next year 6th graders should also have received TWO doses of HEP A. As your student gets these shots throughout this school year be sure to send us a copy too (Tterew@hse.k12.in.us). Be watching your email for a message regarding your individual 5th grade student and what immunizations they need for the next school year. You can always access your child’s school immunization record by logging onto Skyward, and clicking on “HEALTH INFO” in the left hand column (near the bottom).
Allergies and Medication. Just a reminder for those who suffer spring allergies: Please medicate your student before they come to school. We want to keep students in their classes and feeling their best. Allergy medications and cold medications are not stocked in the school clinic. When medicated in the AM before leaving home, the medicine has time to “kick in” to help them feel better for their classes. Allergy medications work best when given on a daily basis, not just when symptoms begin. For the safety of your child and all children in the building, students are not allowed to carry medications with them, store in locker, or pack them in lunch boxes. In some buildings, being caught with medications results in an automatic suspension. Students may drop off needed medication to the clinic with medication guideline form found here: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/resources/pdf/ADM/health/Medication_Guidelines.pdf
As Needed Clinic Medications—looking ahead to next year. Although very few students have trouble swallowing pills at this age level, if yours has trouble swallowing pills, many doctors will suggest (please check with your doctor) practicing swallowing Tic-Tacs as a way to practice swallowing pills. Liquid medication is much more expensive for the clinic to supply. However, the pill form of Tylenol and Advil will be provided by the clinic. If your child is one of the few who cannot swallow pills, please have them practice.
Deodorant and Hygiene. Parents often ask us when should their child start using deodorant? The middle school and junior high years are when most kiddos begin going through puberty, and it becomes necessary to have daily showers and use deodorant. Please have your child use deodorant daily. This will help prevent an embarrassing situation. They can keep an extra in their locker.
