Region VIII All Region Band
On Wednesday evening, January 15th, tenth through twelfth grade members of the high school band participated in the Region VIII All-Region Band auditions held at Southside High School. Alma had twenty members selected to participate in the All-Region Band clinic to be held in Fort Smith on Friday, January 24th and Saturday January 25th. Eleven of these twenty students have also qualified to audition for the Arkansas All-State band. Auditions for the All-State Band will be held on Saturday, February 8th at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia.
Ninth grade members of the high school band traveled to Ozark High School on Saturday, December 14th, 2019 for Junior High All-Region auditions. Nine of these students were chosen to represent Alma at the Region VIII Junior High Band Clinic also to be held in Fort Smith on January 24th & 25th.
Both the Junior and Senior High Clinics will culminate with concerts to be held at the ArcBest Performing Arts Center on Saturday afternoon, January 25, 2020.

What’s the Difference Between Chronic Absence and Truancy?
As the concept of chronic absenteeism gains traction across the country, some people are under the mistaken impression that it's just a politically correct way of saying truancy. Educators, policymakers and journalists often use the words interchangeably, describing the same, old issue with the same, old solution.
In fact, the two terms describe different aspects of the absenteeism issue and require different approaches to bringing students back to school every day.

Voice of Democracy Essay Winners
Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 40,000 9-12 grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $1.9 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.

BINGO!
We have our first Reading BINGO! Congrats on being the first to BINGO and at the same time reaching 2 million words!
Students were given a Reading BINGO sheet in literacy class with different types of books to read and test on. Once they receive a BINGO they get to come to the library and get a prize from the gumball machine. Prizes include books, posters, book fair bucks, candy, Sonic drinks and more! Just another way we are promoting reading at AMS!
