FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
This is certainly a unique time in all of our lives. We are all dealing with multiple concerns, and for many of you, the education of your children is just one of them. We know that many are struggling with conditions at your place of work, relatives, your bills, daycare, and many other things. We want you to know that we want to do anything and everything that we can to help you with your child’s education.
As you probably know by now, the Governor has closed all schools in Arkansas for at least the first three weeks after spring break. Following is a quote from Arkansas Secretary of Education Johnny Key on Thursday.
“I trust that educators and parents will understand this is not perfect, but we can’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good,” ADE Secretary Johnny Key said. “While the suspension of onsite instruction is necessary to protect our students, the extension of AMI is a responsible way to continue education delivery. I have been encouraged and inspired this week by the creativity we have seen from teachers in posting engaging lessons and activities for their students across a variety of platforms. I appreciate the efforts of our educators, and I look for this dedication and creativity to continue as we work through this difficult time."
When spring break is over, we will continue educating your children. All of us at Alma School District are working as hard as we know how to provide the very best educational experiences possible for them, given the circumstances.
Teachers will continue with essentially the same teaching as they have done this week, except they will need to begin to introduce new material and work on new skills. We cannot afford for students to go four weeks (or more) and not continue to move forward with their education.
Learning will continue to be mostly online for those students that have internet access. For those students that do not have internet access, we are making plans to provide them with paper copies of work.
In addition to this, your child, with your assistance, is strongly encouraged to explore interesting educational topics on their own. The world is full of things to explore. Please encourage your students to use their imagination and creativity to work on their own, in addition to the work that their teachers send them.
I want to emphasize that these three weeks are school days. This is not an extended spring break or a preview of summer. Please do everything you can to assure that your child does their assignments and more. If they don’t, they will have a difficult time when we return to regular school. This is really important.
After spring break, we will continue to provide breakfast and lunch to any student that wants it. We are exploring ideas to make these meals more interesting and tasty. The delivery method will change slightly so that we can more efficiently get meals to those families that want them. There will be more information about this later.
To the Alma community and parents, THANK YOU for everything you are doing to assist our students through this time. This is difficult for all of us, but especially so for young people. They are worried about their family and their future, they miss seeing their friends, they even miss seeing their teachers. It is important that all of us support them in every way possible.
Again, we want to do everything we can. We are always available for your questions, suggestions, and ideas. We will keep you updated as needed.
