National School Counselors Week
Parents, the press, administrators and the general public often wonder just what it is that school counselors do on a daily basis. Gone are the days of school counselors sitting in their office simply handing out college applications, making schedule changes for students who want to drop a class or waiting for a crisis to occur. Today's school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement, career, and social/emotional development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow.
Did you know that the state of Arkansas recently passed a law stating “A school counselor shall spend at least ninety percent (90%) of his or her working time during student contact days providing direct & indirect services to students? This new law allows school counselors more time to impact students. A lot of school counselors are tasked with the responsibility of being a Testing Coordinator for their school, which takes valuable time away from students. Thankfully, the Alma School District has Testing Coordinators within the district to serve in this capacity, which allows counselors to focus on providing direct & indirect services to students.

Our counselors are so much more than the above definition. They go above and beyond every day to advocate for our students. They are an ear to listen, a mindful adult to provide direction and the calm voice that shows them accountability, they are a safe place for kids to discuss their troubles and worries. We truly have the best group of counselors working every day to make a difference in the lives of our students. Thank you to Haley Blanton at APS, Kristin Wagner at AIS, Rhonda Jones and Becky Lowrey at AMS, Tawnya Shelton, Manessah Moore, and Megan Reese at AHS and Brandi Brogan our District Family Engagement Coordinator. We couldn't do it without you!!
