Lions Ledger
Patriot Elementary School October 2018
Message from the Principal
Dear Patriot Families,
Welcome to the fall season! Here it is, October, and we are almost through the first quarter. During the first part of the school year students have worked hard at learning classroom and school routines. In the classrooms, students are working at building caring communities where they can support one another in their learning and practice Boys Town social skills to encourage and facilitate positive dialogue and communication. In the hallways, students move quickly and quietly between locations with their “lion’s tails and bubbles.” Building a PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention System) learning environment, focuses on positive reinforcement, practice of procedures and expectations, and a healthy community. Students are becoming more aware everyday of how voices carry in our building and how important it is for them to be respectful of others who are learning. In the cafeteria, students are given the option to sit where they are most comfortable (on a certain side of the cafeteria). In everything they do, students are guided to be respectful, responsible, and safe. As we move forward through the remainder of the year students will continue to build their understanding of what it means to be respectful, responsible and safe. The PBIS team has implemented a grade level monthly contest to reward students for promoting safe, positive behavior. Last month, the administrators and a few other teachers provided second graders with an extra afternoon recess. Great job second grade!
I am so very thankful for the number of volunteers at Patriot. “Researchers have been studying the effects parent attitudes and actions have on their children's academic success for more than 30 years. The results have been consistent. Anne Henderson and Nancy Berla summed it up in their book A New Generation of Evidence: The Family Is Critical to Student Achievement, which reviewed the existing research: "When parents are involved in their children's education at home, they do better in school. And when parents are involved in school, children go farther in school and the schools they go to are better." Research shows that when parents are involved in their children's education, the children are more likely to:
- earn better grades.
- score higher on tests.
- pass their classes.
- attend school regularly.
- have better social skills.
- show improved behavior.
- be more positive in their attitude toward school.
- complete homework assignments.
- graduate and continue their education.
We LOVE parent volunteers and encourage all to participate if available, even if it’s visiting with your child each night regarding class learning and friendships.
Please be aware of the dates in October, Patriot will be very busy. I look forward to seeing families for our Pride Night – Title I Literacy Night. Events for the evening include a chili cook off, choir performance, attendance award presentation, and parent class on anti-bullying prevention. I hope you will be able to join us!
Parent conferences will be held October 17-18th, please stop by and visit if you need anything, would like to introduce yourself, or if you have any feedback and/or ideas. The
Patriot family community can only be the best it can be if we all work together, providing solutions, and have high expectations for academic, social, and behavioral achievement.
Appreciate and adore each and every child in our school! Together, we can make a difference. #PatriotPride

We Need You!!
D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Schools) was created by Patriot Staff to promote dads and positive male role models of students to help at our school. We have reserved dates we can use individuals at drop-off and pick-up, reading to students, and helping at recess. Patriot encourages any participation and we will send out messages to ask for volunteers. Research shows the importance of fathers and father-figures in the school setting, and the positive impact it has on academic, social/emotional, and linguistic success. Meet "Journal"
Journal is the 14th Guide Dog Puppy in Training we have had here at Patriot. Someday he will help someone who is blind. He comes to work with Mrs. Niewinski every day and goes home with her every night. He began his training in May 2018. Journal is learning many different commands, and is becoming well socialized with the help of the students and staff at Patriot. In addition to training to help the blind someday, Journal also plays a vital role in the counseling program. He helps calm children down, walks children to class, and even helps dry a few tears. In addition to being at Patriot, you may run into him at the grocery store, the movie theatre, the mall, or at a restaurant. Students, staff, and parents can help train Journal by remembering these Guide Dog Rules:
1. Always ask before petting. We want Journal to be friendly with everyone, but we don’t want him getting too excited about visiting or have him become fearful of people. He must learn that he has to be told when it’s okay to greet other people and dogs.
2. Never offer Journal anything to eat. He is not allowed to take anything from a hand or out of a bowl without being told it is okay to do so. We do not want Journal accepting food from strangers he may encounter when out with his future blind partner.
3. Use a calm voice around Journal. Excited and loud voices can cause dogs to become excited or scared. Practicing calm voices around Journal helps kids and adults learn to use their inside voices
Journal will be with us until June 2019. He will receive orders to return to the Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc. campus, much like military members receive orders to go to other states or countries. Journal loves to work with children, but he also enjoys her free time playing with his Nylabones and Kong toys
** Remember, it is always a good idea to get in the habit of asking before you approach any dog.

We expect all parents to promote safety for our students and community, and be positive role models in our parking lots. Changes to normal routine in child's departure should be communicated to the teacher.
