November 13-17, 2019, saw seven members of the Alma DECA Action team participating in DECA’s Ultimate Power Trip, a leadership conference that was held in Washington, D.C. Lettie Crabtree, Chloe Lewis, Kaitlyn McAllister, Bella Nutt, Zoe Taylor, Michelle Wells and Elissa Williams participated in Hill visits, numerous learning labs and were able to get in a bit of sightseeing too, as they networked with DECA members from the North Atlantic, Southern and Western regions.
“Hill visits were very eye opening to the jobs and responsibilities our Congressmen are tasked with. It was such an amazing experience to be able to talk with them about something that means a lot to me,” shared Bella Nutt. The delegation met with Congressman Bruce Westerman, Senator John Boozman, Senator Tom Cotton, Congressman Rick Crawford’s education staffer, and Congressman Steve Womack sharing their story about the impact of CTE and the importance of continued Carl Perkins Educational funding for students and schools. Kaitlyn McAllister shared, “…our Congressmen and Senators truly do care about the kids of Arkansas and are trying their best to make sure we keep our funding.”
Following opening session, the delegation participated in a series of learning labs pertaining to preparing for college and careers, competitive events, leadership and networking.
The AT&T “Later Haters” session was my favorite. I had learned about social responsibility in marketing class and it was so cool to see it in action,’ said Elissa Williams. The later haters campaign deals with bullying on social media platforms. Michelle Wells added, “Meeting up with other DECA members from around the globe and learning the impact of branding on social media changed my view on social media presence.” From speaking to a jam packed room like Chloe Lewis did, or meeting and learning from members with diverse backgrounds, the Alma group expanded their networks and learned from their peers.
The delegation experienced history from a personal standpoint while participating in the tours and being able to do a little sightseeing. “After touring the capital with Congressman Westerman on Thursday night, I learned things I never would have learned in my history classes,” said Zoe Taylor. Lettie Crabtree said she enjoyed the stories about the desks on the Senate and House floor. “Most of the desks in the Senate and House are the original desks and there are stories behind a few of the desks.” Wells added, “My favorite part of the tours was getting to view Washington D.C. from the speaker’s balcony during the night tour of the capitol with Congressman Westerman.” “We saw almost every landmark in DC and there is no possible way you didn’t learn something or experience something new. It was just great all the way around,” said McAllister. The delegation wrapped up their conference with a viewing of the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington Cemetery.
From learning how to go through an airport, to how to ride the Metro, to experience history in real life, to a variety of learning labs, the delegation had a packed schedule that provided memories they will remember for a lifetime.
