APPLICATIONS:
Sixteen outstanding teachers will be selected to attend the Oklahoma Writing Project 2017 Invitational Summer Institute to be held at the University of Oklahoma. Teachers of all subject areas and of all levels of instruction--Pre K through university--interested in teaching composition or incorporating writing into their regular subject matter instruction may apply. The important consideration is a strong commitment to teaching of composition and helping students' understanding through writing.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION:
Teachers who are selected should have these qualifications:
- Outstanding teaching record.
- Strong commitment to growth in teaching composition.
- Willingness to develop a formal presentation on topics related to writing instruction and to share those presentations with other participants at in-service workshops.
- Willingness to do the writing, research, and reflection that will be asked of all participants during the Summer Institute.
- Demonstrable success as a teacher of writing and promise as an equally successful teacher of other teachers.
- Willingness to be an active participant in the Oklahoma Writing Project and its professional and in-service programs.
- Above all, a strong and open approach to ideas.
2017 OWP Invitational Summer Institute
The Oklahoma Writing Project Summer Institute will be held full days, June 5-8; 12-15; and 19-22 at the Moore Norman Technology Center-Norman campus 9:00 am-4:00 pm. Staff will need to arrive around 8:30 am and leave around 4:30 pm. During the summer, there will be one Friday Session on June 23 8:00-11:30 am at MNTC with a fellowship lunch following at a local restaurant. Finally, all fellows will participate in the OWP 2017 Back-to-School Drive-in Workshop on Saturday, August 12 from 8:15-12:30 pm at Bryant Elementary School/Moore Public Schools and the follow-up lunch and anthology signing party at a local restaurant.

IMPORTANT DATES AND OBLIGATIONS RELATED TO THE SUMMER INSTITUTE APPLICATION PROCESS AND TO PARTICIPATION IN THE SUMMER INSTITUTE:
Application Deadline March 24, 2017. Applicants invited to interview will receive an appointment sign-up email by March 31.
Summer Institute Interviews will be held Saturday, April 8 beginning at 8:30 am in the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education, Collings Hall. Interviews are a required part of the application process. Bring student writing samples and professional vita. (See below.)
2017 OWP Summer Institute Orientation held on the OU Campus in Norman (Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education, Collings Hall) on Saturday, April 22 from 8:30 am-4:00 pm. It is mandatory accepted applicants attend this day.
2017 Oklahoma Writing Project Summer Institute mandatory attendance on all institute days June 5-8; 12-15; and 19-22 from 9:00 am-4:00 pm
2017 Power of Teaching Symposiun, Friday, June 23 from 8:00-11:30 am.
2017 Fellowship Luncheon, Friday, June 23 at a local restaurant following the symposium.
2017 OWP Back-to-School Drive-in Workshop on August 12 from 8:30 am-12:30 pm at Bryant Elementary School
2017 OWP Luncheon and Anthology Signing Party, August 12 from 1:00-2:00pm at a local restaurant.
IMPORTANT: Start saving your student writing samples now. You will need student samples for your interview and during the Summer Institute. Be sure and save high/low ability examples from your writing lessons. Originals are great but copies are fine.
At the interview, you will bring your professional vita and some of your student writing samples.
Lodging Scholarships are available. Be sure to indicate on your application.
