ATTENTION 5th GRADE PARENTS🎶
Band Instrument selection for incoming middle school students
It is an exciting time for 5th grade students who are enrolled in middle school band - time to choose their INSTRUMENTS!!!
Your child’s middle school Band Director will be organizing opportunities for all 5th grade students to learn more about the band instruments that students can play in middle school in the next couple of weeks. Then, students who have enrolled in band class will get to try instruments to find the one that will be the best fit for them.
Trying the Instruments
In-Person Option: We have developed a Covid safe plan for instrument try-it nights. Families who choose this option will have the opportunity to sign up for appointments. Two adults may attend with the student. Each student will get to use a Wind Instrument Try Out Kit to find the mouthpiece that is the best fit for them. There is one Try-Out Kit for each student to use, so no one will need to share or use a mouthpiece that has been used by another student. Students will get to hold the instruments they are interested in playing and the student and their parent/guardian will get to visit with a band director about their instrument selection.
Virtual Option: Alternatively, families could choose to participate in a virtual instrument try-it via zoom. These individual sessions will be scheduled by appointment with one of the area band directors. Students will be able to use the Wind Instrument Try Out Kit to find the mouthpiece that is the best fit for them. The student and their parent/guardian will get to visit with a band director about their instrument selection. (Wind Instrument Try-out Kits will be available to use.)
Sign up information will be posted in an upcoming principal's newsletter.
Note that there are a variety of instruments available for students to play in 6th grade. In most cases, the family will provide the instrument by renting or purchasing a new or used instrument or refurbishing an instrument they have available. Instruments will not be needed until school starts in the fall of 2021. In some cases, for larger instruments, the instrument is provided by the district. The Blue Valley Educational Association has established a program to provide instruments for students who would not otherwise be able to participate for financial reasons. Please contact your child's band teacher or principal if assistance is needed.
REMEMBER: If your child did not enroll in band, strings or choir in middle school, it is not too late! Contact your child’s middle school counselor to enroll.
Blue Valley Summer Explorations
Enrollment is Open!
Looking for engaging summer learning opportunities for your child? Check out Blue Valley’s Summer Explorations program, which features a wide array of one-week hands-on experiences that put fun at the forefront of learning. From STEMtopia, to Carpenter’s Corner, to Cooking Cool Cultural Foods - there is something for everyone. Enrollment begins at 8 a.m. on March 8 and remains open through 4 p.m. on March 29. All summer programs will be held in-person unless otherwise noted. The district will continue to employ appropriate COVID-19 mitigation practices during summer programs for safe learning environments. Additional information about the summer explorations programs can be found online at www.bluevalleyk12.org/summerprograms.
Register for the 2021-22 school year today
Elementary school registration for the 2021-22 school year is open and online now for current students. Registration is required annually and is the time to update your child’s information and pay fees.
Important registration details
Plans for the 2021-22 school year are being designed in anticipation that the majority of our students will return to school for the traditional in-person experience our families know and value. For those interested, the district will continue to offer an all-virtual learning option.
Elementary families will be asked to select their learning preference (full-year virtual or in-person) during the registration process. Families enrolled in in-person learning will have an opportunity in July to make a change to the full-time virtual option if desired. The only move a student will be allowed to make in July is INTO the full-time virtual option, not vice versa. Families who feel unsure about the full-time virtual option are encouraged to enroll in-person. This allows for the flexibility of moving to full-time virtual, as desired, in July. Learn more about the virtual option on the district website.
Completing registration and paying fees now confirms that your child will attend school in August. Thank you for providing important information and parent permissions as part of the registration process. For more information about registration, visit www.bluevalleyk12.org/registration.

STEAM Makerspace Donations
We are in need of items to help keep our STEAM Makerspace up and running. Our Wildcats have been creating all types of projects this year from turkey traps to March Madness basketball hoops. Any donations from our wish list would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for supporting student collaboration and creativity!
School Yearbooks
Stanley will again be using TreeRing this school year to publish and print our yearbook! You will purchase your Stanley yearbook DIRECTLY from the TreeRing site, not through the PTO website or Parentvue. Parents will be able to upload all school-related pictures with an app on their iPhones directly to specific folders.
Those photos will then be used to design and create the yearbook! There is also the option for you to create your own 2-page spread to be printed at the end of the book, personalized with your very own pictures, just for your student, included in the price! This all can be done from your desktop computers, as well!!
**It is currently not compatible with Android, so for us Android users, we can upload pictures on our desktops from Facebook, Google photos, Dropbox, etc. directly to the Stanley TreeRing folders! Lots of photos at once!!
There are folders for First Days of School, Family Fun Run, etc. No need to caption each picture!
YEARBOOKS ARE NOT ORDERED THROUGH THE PTO WEBSITE! They must be ordered directly from families on the TreeRing website www.treering.com
There are instructions on how to upload your photos and learn how to customize some of the pages in your child's yearbook!
To order go to www.TreeRing.com/validate and enter Stanley's passcode: 10152415384287

Counselor's Corner
I’ve had a fun week with our kindergarten, first and second grade students! Kindergarten heard the story “Sometimes I’m Bombaloo” by Rachel Vail. They were able to share their own stories of feeling angry and we talked as a group about how we can cope when we’re feeling angry. First grade students wrapped up talking about careers with Career Bingo! It’s easy to forget that our children don’t know a lot about different jobs at such a young age. Exposing them to diverse careers and the descriptions that belong to them helps open their eyes to possibilities ahead! Lastly, second grade spent some time learning about small, medium and big problems and why it’s important to discern one from another. We shared personal examples and completed a small cut/paste activity together. The weather will be amazing this weekend! I hope you all can find a snippet of time to enjoy it! See you next week.

Testing Sites
If you have family or friends in the area looking to get a FREE COVID-19 test, here are some helpful websites. Only name, phone number or email are required to get a test. No insurance or official ID needed. These are PCR tests with an average turnaround time for results of 36-48 hours.
- https://www.gogettested.com/kansas : These are free sites and test all ages. Including sites such as Shawnee Mission North High School, Johnson County Community College and Church of the Resurrection. The go get tested sites are expanding everyday as more sites are secured by KDHE.
- https://www.hearttoheart.org/jococovid/: Has six more testing events before the end of the year.
- https://www.jocogov.org/schedule-covid-19-test (JCDHE continues to offer testing for ages 5+)
Water Bottles At School:
Please remind your student to bring a water bottle to school, as our drinking fountains are shut down at this time due to COVID precautions. Our students are very active and even with decreasing temperatures outside our bodies require hydration throughout the day.
