SCS Weekly Newsletter: 9/9/22
A beautiful start to September.
From the Principal's Desk: Building Community
It’s been a good, if somewhat short, week here at Salisbury Community School. The structure of having a year start with a three day week, followed by the four day week created by having Labor Day off, gives our students (especially our youngest ones) a chance to build up their stamina for school. Students seem to really be settling in and learning the systems and expectations within their classes, and around our campus. They have a ton of enthusiasm, which brings so much energy and fun to the day, and they are getting into the groove and adjusting to steering that enthusiasm in positive and school-focused ways.
In talking with other principals and administrators around Addison Central School District, it seems that all of our schools are experiencing a really calm and productive start to the year. After all the disruptions of the last two years, that feels great to say.
Please read below to hear a bit about what our students and educators are doing!
All the best,

This Week's Classroom Focus:
5th Grade with Mrs. Wisnowski
Our fifth grade class has been working on creating a place where we embrace differences and exercise a growth mindset. We have identified Risk-Taking as one of our IB learner profile attributes that connects with having a growth mindset. Students have made individual goals for themselves and have developed a plan to achieve them. Ask them about their goal!
In Reading and Writing, fifth grade students have continued to reflect on what makes up their identity. With this concept, students have been working on identifying positive traits that make them who they are. They have been sharing their personal interests in their writing notebooks. We have also carried this over into our Reading block where we have started to analyze the main characters and had discussions about what makes them who they are.
In Math, we have been working on finding the area and volume with the help of our omnifix cubes. We have also been working to notice how money and analog clocks can be represented by fractions.
Using our outdoor spaces:
At Salisbury Community School we are blessed to have a beautiful 40 acre campus that many caring hands have crafted into really usable outdoor spaces. With three outdoor classrooms, our “secret soccer field” and our large recess space, we really are able to roam. Here are some pictures of our outdoor classrooms in use.
