Don Benito Fundamental - Updates 02/01/2021
Message from the Principal
Dear Don Benito Families,
Welcome February! This month we celebrate Black History Month, Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day. I want to encourage our students to celebrate the diversity within our community and continue to perform acts of kindness. A more understanding society is possible when we create a space to learn about others and appreciate their differences. As Dr. King stated, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that". Education is light!
Did you know that February 1 is National Freedom Day? Today is the anniversary of the approval of the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery in 1865. During Black History month, the school community honors the accomplishments and rich heritage of African Americans. Teachers will engage their students in lessons about Black History. It is a time to reflect on issues of equality, racism and social justice. Unfortunately, systemic racism is still prevalent in society today. Please be ready to continue the conversations at home.
Teachers are also planning activities to celebrate Valentine's Day and Chinese New Years. Teachers will plan virtual activities for students to celebrate Valentine's safely. A few ideas include each student creating a Valentines slide for their classmates and sharing all the slides in one presentation or having students record a Flipgrid! I know our teachers have many more ideas!
Lastly, I greatly appreciate your support with the Read-a-thon. It is through the generous contributions of our community that we can expand the educational opportunities of our children. Remember, all donations make a difference, but the greatest contribution is to instill a love of reading in our students. Don't forget to check out the prizes your child can earn.
Have a wonderful month!
Kind regards,
Dr. Bugarin

Student Engagement
While some students have adjusted well and are thriving during virtual learning, other are not. Teachers can best address students needs when they can interact with them. This requires that cameras are turned on during synchronous learning. Teachers have many routines in the classroom to efficiently use learning time.
Please make sure students have morning routines at home. Students should have enough time before the start of the school day to eat breakfast and get dressed for school to be camera ready. To ensure privacy in the home, students can blur the background on the Google Meet. Students also benefit from working in a quiet area of the home so they can focus. If a student requires head phones to diminish background noise, please reach out to the teacher. We will do our best to provide headphones.
