Principal Message
Dear Oscar Howe families,
Can you believe we are already in our last quarter of the 2022-2023 school year? Slow, but surely, spring weather is coming. I know this time of year is a busy time for staff, students, and families. Yet, we continue to remain focused on maximizing our time with your children.
During the fourth quarter students will have district and state testing, which is an opportunity for students to show what they know. Our students in third through fifth grade will be taking the SD state assessments in both Math and ELA this month. We know students do their best when they have a good night’s rest, a healthy breakfast and a positive attitude. Encouraging words from parents and guardians help to build students’ confidence during this time. Please help us by reminding your child(ren) to do their best. Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade will take the MAP testing in May.
We know we are all anxious for the warmer weather and below are a few reminders:
· We ask that students do not bring their own balls or toys to use during recess. We do provide various balls in our ball cart and Mr. Lower is restocking our cart for the last quarter of school.
· As a reminder, animals are not allowed on the school grounds between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on days when school is in session. For more information on this policy, please visit the district’s website at www.sf.k12.sd.us/page/policies-contracts. It is policy IMG-R.
· Warmer temperatures mean more students are walking to school again. Please be mindful of our crosswalks and stop for students/parents who are in the crosswalk. At times it can be difficult to see our corners, so please watch your speeds in our school zones. We want to keep all children and parents safe!
If your child rides the bus, the expectation is for students to have their bus pass with them every day. Please check with your child to make sure they have their passes. If they have lost their pass or do not have one it costs $5 to replace it. We can reprint one in the office. When students do not have their passes they have to have a written one, which prevents our buses from leaving on time.
Upcoming Dates to Note:
March 27 – April 28 SD State Assessments for 3rd-5th grade students
April 3 – PTA Meeting 6:30 p.m.
April 4 – Band/Orchestra Concert 1:15p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
April 7 – No School
April 10 – No School
As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns.

Front Office Reminders:
WHAT IS THE "OSCAR WOW" AWARD?
The Oscar Wow Award is given through teacher and staff nominations to students that consistently exceed expectations in and outside of the classroom. Students can also receive the award if they have shown increased improvement with academics and/or behavior. Nominations will be submitted every quarter to one student.
Awards will consist of a phone call to parents, a certificate highlighting their excellence, a picture taken with their teacher, a special surprise, and their photo displayed in the front hallway along with an individualized paragraph of recognition from the teacher! We are looking forward to highlighting students for their excellence!
