October - Word of the Month is Teamwork
Hello everyone~hard to believe we are approaching the end of the first quarter which is October 21. Items I have listed are of importance:
- Parent/Teacher conferences are Oct. 25 and 27. We are hoping you can be in attendance. A sign up link will be sent out soon. Please contact your child(rens) teacher for alternatives if you cannot be in attendance.
- Lunches: please keep an eye on your child(rens) lunch accounts. They have choices this year and several are going back for seconds which is great. Keep in mind there is a charge for having seconds on the main entree. Students are welcome to frequent the salad bar if they pay for a meal. We are noticing children eating cold lunch and then wanting eat school lunch as well. Please check those accounts.
- Lost and found-please take a look through our lost and found items during conferences.
As always if there are any concerns or questions please feel free to contact me at 947-4428 or email brian.dejong@hintonschool.com
Thank you~
Mr. DeJong

Everyone is sure to have a ghoulish good time.
Parent - Teacher Conferences
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on October 25 and 27. Please note that one of these dates is different than what was on the original year-long calendar. We will dismiss school at 2:20 on both days. Conferences can be scheduled between 3:30 and 7:30 each evening. There will be no school for staff or students on Friday, October 28. Parents will schedule their conferences electronically (you will receive a link). We ask that parents be on-time for their conferences and end on time to be respectful of all of our families’ time. If more time is needed to discuss something more in-depth, a follow up meeting can be scheduled.
ISASP Results
On Monday, October 10, your student will be bringing home their ISASP scores from last spring. These results will provide the educators, parents, and students important information about student performance that an be used to guide learning to gest help each student. More information about your student's achievement level scores can be found at
Ag in the Classroom
Ag in the Classroom will begin in October for second and fourth graders at Hinton and surrounding schools. In rural Iowa, we are surrounded by agriculture and its impact on America's economy every day, yet many children in our region are still unsure of the origin of their food. It's not uncommon for today's youth to believe chocolate milk is produced by brown cows - or even more surprising - the grocery store. This growing issue becomes more apparent as each day passes. Thus, Siouxland Agriculture in the Classroom was created. A group of individuals who saw the need for increased agriculture education came together to create a non-profit organization to address this issue. We work to lessen the gap between producer and consumer that is so prominent is today's society. The programming provided by our organization gives students in the area the opportunity to learn where their food comes from and recognize the vital role agriculture plays in our lives. These youth are America's future buyers, voters and influencers. We need them to understand the importance of agriculture!
FAST Testing and Interventions
The students completed the Reading and Math FAST assessments in September. The scores create a snapshot of a student's skills in fluency, reading comprehension, and math. At school, we have implemented WIN (What I Need) time from 11:55-12:15 to boost skills that will give them an extra scoop of instruction.
5th Grade Team Building Day
The 5th grade class spent a day at Hillview doing team-building activities. They started the day with accomplishing tasks as a class and learning how to work together. We talked about our strengths and how to use those strengths to become a better team. The remainder of the day the class got to practice using their team skills by building shelters, canoeing and orienteering.
6th Grade Celebrated Positive Behaviors
All three of the 6th grade classes enjoyed a reward party for positive behaviors! Ms. Hanson's class spent time on the football field playing, Mr. Rife's room had a snack bar for the day and Mrs. Petersen's class had an ice cream party. We love getting to celebrate positive behaviors!
