Borlaug Scholar and Arkansas Youth Institute Finalist
Maddie Scowden, Alma FFA Sentinel, was announced as a Borlaug Scholar and Arkansas Youth Institute finalist during the virtual Arkansas State FFA Convention.
Maddie presented her paper over “Creating Sustainable Agriculture in the Country of Sudan” during the 2020 Arkansas Youth Institute to a panel of experts and fellow FFA members from across the state of Arkansas.
As a Borlaug Scholar and finalist, Maddie will have the opportunity to apply for various internships and fellowships in the years to come and has received the opportunity to attend the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute later this year.
Great job, Maddie!! We can't wait to watch the rest of your journey!
FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Wow. What a spring we have been through. I want to begin by saying “Thank You” to everyone, but especially all of the parents of Alma students. Our efforts to provide worthwhile educational experiences for our students during this time would not have been as successful as they were without the help and support of parents. The motivation, counseling, support, and guidance that parents have provided have been key in the success we have had.
We know that the educational experiences this spring were not anything close to what they would have been under normal circumstances. Our teachers learned a lot about the best ways to teach remotely. But we still have a lot to learn. We will be spending the summer working diligently to get better at this.
We have no idea yet what school will look like next fall. But I think there is a very good chance that in some way it will not be “business as usual.” What that may mean is anyone’s guess. School may begin with many different restrictions on social distancing. We may be restricted in terms of the types of activities that students can participate in. Transportation may have to work differently. Or, we may have to close again at some point during next year.
We are preparing as best we can for all of the above, plus many more scenarios. This includes being able to educate some students in the classroom, while at the same time other students may be learning remotely from home. What you can be sure of is that we will be prepared to do whatever it takes to provide the best education possible to every Alma student, no matter where they are, how old they are, what their circumstances are, or anything else.
Two weeks ago we put a survey online for parents and students about what learning has been like this spring. If you have not already done so, I encourage you to complete this survey. It will be very helpful to us in planning for the future. You can access the survey at this link: Learning Survey for Students and Parents.
These are difficult times for all of us. Everyone at Alma School District will never relax in our mission of doing everything we can to help our students on their journey toward becoming successful adults.
Please let us know if we can help you or your family in any way.
