Tuesday Lunch Information
On Tuesday maintenance will be here shutting down our gas line and putting in a new line for our stove that will be installed on Wednesday. This means that there will not be a "hot" option for breakfast on Tuesday, only options that can be served without heating. In addition, that means that we will not be serving pizza, only the main option for lunch.
School Wide Safety Drill
I wanted to let you know that today we had a school-wide safety drill. To prepare the students for the drill, the teachers watched videos and had many class discussions. Today's safety drill included students practicing lockdown, barricade, and walking to our designated evacuation rally point locations. Before, during, and after the safety drill teachers discussed with students strategies to keep them safe, as well as provided the students with opportunities to ask questions. Please take some time this evening to talk with your child, and allow them to ask questions and share their experiences from today's school wide safety drill.

Student Directory (Optional)
In an effort to assist students to connect with friends outside of school to foster friendships we would like to offer a grade level directory. You may use this directory to contact students and families outside of school to make plans and/or invite to parties, playdates etc. If you choose to use this directory for party invitations - please follow our student handbook. Invitations may not be passed out at school (this includes before/during/after school, at recess, or on the bus). This directory will only be shared with families who have given permission to participate. By completing this form you are giving permission for Applewood staff to share your information with other families. Please fill out a form for each child in each grade level. If at any point you would like a directory for your child's grade level, please contact the teacher.

Applewood Counselors Corner
A Word Form Mrs. Esser Our Guidance Counselor
You may remember Miss Emily Demetriades worked with me during the spring to complete her practicum experience towards her Masters in School Counselling. I am very excited to share that she has returned and will be working with me this school year to complete her internship experience. During this time, she will meet individually with students, help to teach classroom guidance lessons, and facilitate small counseling lunch groups. Please reach out with any questions you may have about Emily’s role at our school. If you do not wish to have your child participate in counseling sessions while Miss Demetriades is present, please contact me directly at desser@bcsoh.org or 330-273-0481.

Classroom Guidance
Miss Demetriades and I spent the last two weeks visiting each Kindergarten classroom four times. During our visits we taught about Skills for Learning and Empathy. Skills for Learning are essential to the successful development of learners because they help children understand and practice listening with attention, focusing, using self talk to repeat important things, and to be assertive and ask for help. Empathy is recognizing feelings in others and showing kindness when someone needs help. Empathy is a skill that helps children understand one another and develop meaningful relationships with others. Next week we look forward to starting our lessons in first grade!
Lunch Groups
This past week we began Skills for Learning lunch groups in each grade to help reinforce what is taught during classroom guidance lessons. These groups were formed based on teacher referrals.
Stay Tuned for a Parent Interest Survey for future lunch groups!
