Kindergarten
Although I have spent a good deal of time with the kindergarten classes, last week was the first experience of me offering a whole group lesson. We spent our time together reading a book, The Rabbit Listened. In the book, the character had really big feelings and needed the right support to help them work through those emotions. Thankfully the rabbit was there to listen, which is a lot like what a school counselor does. We briefly discussed what I do as a school counselor and what they can expect from our whole group lessons.
First Grade
In first grade we took a safari to get to know each other better. The students shared something that was important to them by creating a safari hat. We were able to share those with the whole group and I shared some info about myself as well. Part of that information was discussing how a counselor is like a compass and can lead the way when your safari trip gets a bit bumpy.
Second Grade
Second grade is so sweet, just like a pineapple. To teach this bunch about the role of a counselor we compared ourselves to a pineapple. I explained that although we might have rough days (like the outside of the pineapple) a counselor can help get to the sweet fruit that is on the inside of each of us. We then completed a directed drawing of a pineapple to showcase our differences.
Third Grade
The focus of the third graders was to find the positivity in each situation. We learned how the power of positivity can change your brain chemistry. We discussed how focusing on the negative can bring us and those around us down, but if we start noticing the good we will start seeing more positives in life. We completed our first Max Moment to showcase the good that we have experienced at school this year.
