Celebrating Open House!
From the Principal's Desk: Reflecting on opening our doors for Open House
Good Evening,
All my life, I have always found tremendous comfort seeing homes with lights on at night. Interestingly, it's not that seeing them makes me feel comfortable in the moment (after all, I need to be outside to see them), but they make me think of others being comfortable, especially on fall or winter evenings when the air has turned cold. There's something cozy about seeing a building buttoned up against the weather, with lights blazing away.
During our open house this week, I took a moment to walk outside to look at the school- our school- with hundreds of people inside and the lights blazing merrily. It was such a happy event, such a lovely evening, and our school looked so safe and warm- it made me feel so fortunate to be your principal.
But really, it was what was happening inside that mattered. Throughout the beginning of this year, I have emphasized how much community matters, and community was in full effect during open house. It was exciting to see students come not only with parents and guardians, but with grandparents, family friends, aunts and uncles, and older siblings. While they were here, our students did a wonderful job of taking their guests around the building- showing them their classrooms, the library, 2nd and 3rd grade's "town" in the gym, the stage/art room, and other places that matter in their school lives. Teachers had displayed student work, and it was great to see the time people spent to look that work over. It was also wonderful to just connect as people- neighbors talking to neighbors, people introducing themselves to others they didn't know, adults catching up with children they hadn't seen in a while.
So a big "thank you"- to our staff for all the work that goes into an open house, to our students for buying into open house and really being great ambassadors for our school, and to our guests, who were so open and engaged throughout. It was a wonderful night.
Can you believe it's October already?
Best,
Principal Bjarki Sears
Reminder: Wednesday, October 5th is an early release day.

Using data to inform instruction: FAST testing at SCS
FOSCS "Clear the Trails!" Monday, October 10th from 5:00-7:00 PM.
Look below for a link to a sign-up document. Certainly don't feel like you have to sign up in order to come, but we thought it might help people see where some tools might be needed. The more people the merrier- we can get the work in before dark!
A few other dates to know/save.
2. Save the date for picture day! October 25th will be our picture day- we will send the information home in a few weeks (so you don't lose it!)
And a few more fun photos from the Open House:
Applesauce made with apples from across the street. (Thanks to the Bagleys!)
Great attendance!
