10 Tips for Planning a Top Notch Author Visit at Your School!
Presented by Read Local Illinois' Sarah Aronson. This interactive presentation and discussion is dedicated to the importance and fun of author-illustrator school visits. We will discuss the benefits of bringing an author or illustrator to your school, the nuts and bolts of planning a visit, and how to make the most of this opportunity. Sarah has lots of easy and effective ideas, whether you are interested in a virtual visit or in person. Be prepared for a lively discussion with plenty of time for questions.

Sarah Aronson began writing for kids and teens when someone in an exercise class dared her to try. Since then, she has earned an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and published the following books for kids and teens: Head Case, Beyond Lucky, and Believe, a young MG series, The Wish List, as well as Just Like Rube Goldberg (Beach Lane Books), illustrated by Robert Neubecker. Forthcoming books include Brand New Bubbe (Charlesbridge) and a picture book biography of Bella Abzug, called Abzuglutely! (Calkins Creek, Boyds Mills & Kane). Like tips? Feb. 1, 2022. Awarded annually, AISLE scholarships are specifically designed to support those who are taking school library coursework leading to Illinois licensure. AISLE grants support current Illinois school librarians, those working to become school librarians, or Illinois school library programs. Please review the individual scholarship and grant pages on the AISLE website for specific terms, criteria, and eligibility requirements.

AISLE Chapter Events
1-27 Due North Chapter Meeting at 4:30 pm at Rockland School. All K-8 Lake County school librarians are welcome, so please tell your colleagues. We will discuss Chapters 3 and 4 of 5 Kinds of Nonfiction by Melissa Stewart. We will also chat about whatever is on people's minds: successes, ideas, strategies for advocacy, etc. A virtual option will continue to be offered. (For more info, see the AISLE website)
1-27 The Librarians in the South Suburbs (LISS) Chapter of AISLE will be holding our first PD meeting on Thursday, January 27th at 7pm CST via Zoom. Sarah Smith will be presenting on Manga and the School Library. Sara Smith is currently in her 8th year as a high school Teacher Librarian in Sanger, CA. She has been reading manga and comic books for most of her life. She currently reviews for: The Graphic Library, her website, where she posts nearly a review-a-day; "No Flying No Tights"; Booklist; and, School Library Journal. Six ILA Legislative Meet-ups Scheduled
This series of six legislative events provides an opportunity to meet with your legislators and hear their thoughts firsthand about issues affecting libraries in your area. All elected officials on the state and federal level are invited. Library trustees, directors, and staff from public, school, and academic libraries are encouraged to attend and participate. February 14-17 IDEAcon (Illinois Digital Educators Alliance conference) is at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel. 2022 Annual Library Certification Is Live
Certification is required of all library system members to qualify for continuing system services and grant programs from the State Library. The window for certification closes on March 31. Visit your library system website or L2 for more information.

Your dues enable AISLE to develop and expand professional development and continuing education opportunities. They provide underwriting for the revision of the Illinois School Library Media Guidelines and representation at state and national meetings.
AISLE and its membership promote:
- Student interaction with information and ideas to enable them to make educated decisions.
- Continuing education of school library media specialist through conferences, seminars, and workshops.
- Collaboration among parents, community members, teachers, and administrators to prepare students for life-long learning

AISLE Board Issues Statement on Censorship
AISLE is opposed to any attempt to force the removal of materials from school libraries. We strongly condemn recent efforts, by force or intimidation, to remove works that focus on or document the experiences of members of the LGBTQIA+ or BIPOC communities. We oppose censorship and any effort that limits or denies access to materials to coerce belief, suppress opinion or punish those whose expression does not conform to a singular point-of-view of history, politics, or religion.
