News from Panther Headquarters
January 2019
From the desk of the Principal...
Hello Panther Families –
Greetings from the land of the Panthers! It is a very busy time for Hamilton Southeastern Intermediate & Junior High. There is a lot to be accomplished during the short month of December; our last day of school before break will be Friday, December 21st.
With the semester ending this month prior to Holiday Break, all students in grades 5-8 will be taking Round 2 of the NWEA assessment. The results will allow teachers to see where academic growth and achievement have taken place for our students, and thus drive their instructional planning accordingly. It is our belief that all students can learn, but they learn at different rates. With the excellent instruction provided by our staff and the willingness of students to work hard and do their best, they will show growth in their learning. We believe in the attached photo. When students say they don’t understand, we remind them to add ‘…YET’ to the end of their comment. Remember that Monday, January 7th is a teacher work day only and students will return to second semester on Tuesday, January 8th.
It is our mission to provide the best possible education learning environment for all of our students, and in doing so, provide the communication that families need to stay involved as a partner. When questions arise, please contact our teachers, counselors, or administrators to assist you as needed. We appreciate your support along our educational journey, and on behalf of the HIJH Staff, I wish you the very best as we approach this Holiday Season!
Respectfully,
Tim A. Mankin

February 20 - 22nd is when you and your 8th Grade child will be scheduled to meet with a HS Counselor, at our HIJH building, to create your child’s Course Requests for the 9th Grade. We, HIJH, will be scheduling those 15 minute appointments, 9:45 AM - 2:30 PM timeslots, at the end of January, and will extend that information to you as soon as arrangements have been made. If you know of a date that you are NOT available, please inform the HIJH guidance office ASAP. Appointment times are randomly assigned and cannot be changed once they are assigned.
FISHERS HIGH SCHOOL students will be scheduled on February 22nd only.
Current 6th and 7th Grade Students: As second semester approaches, students should watch for information explaining scheduling choices for their 7th and 8th grade year. Sometime second semester, those students will meet in classrooms with their junior high counselor to discuss course selection options for the 2019-2020 school year. Please know that you will be able to verify those course selections later in the spring.
Current 5th Grade Students: Course selection for the 2019-2020 school year will be a natural progression of the courses they are currently scheduled.
Withdrawing Your Student: If your child will be withdrawing from HIJH, you MUST notify the guidance office at least two days in advance of your child’s last day. Withdrawal forms prepared by the Guidance Office must be signed by the parent/guardian. Once all administrative items are completed, a copy of the withdrawal form, current grades and schedule will be given to the student to provide to their future school for enrollment.
HONOR ROLL postings are on the HIJH website! HIJH Honor Roll is located on the Home page of the HIJH website. https://hij.hseschools.org. Students receiving high honor roll have received no grade lower than an A-. Students receiving regular honor high honor roll have received no grade lower than a B-.
Testing Dates to Note: Please mark your calendars to ensure your child is in attendance these testing periods.
ILEARN testing window - April 22 - May 17, 2019
It is extremely important that your child be in attendance and on time during these testing days. Please assist us by ensuring that your child is well rested and eats a healthy breakfast. Also, it would be advantageous to reschedule any appointments you have scheduled during these days. Thank you in advance for your assistance with this testing process.

Messages from the Nurse
The clinic is in need of gently used girls leggings for 5th thru 8th grade. Reminder: Per district policy, if your student has a fever of 100 degrees (without using medication to lower it) they need to stay home. The clinic does not have "cold" or allergy medications.
PAWSitive Thinking
The PAWS committee set a goal for each student to look INSIDE themselves, discovering that they are limitless and to see themselves as a gift to those around them. The students then reflected after watching the video below on what gift they could give their friends, the school, the world? Each student then wrote their gift on a Post-it and helped wrap a huge gift! Please take a few minutes to watch this awesome no limits video and encourage you child to be limitless! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw34Ams2Rzs

Attention all parents of 8th Graders
Attention all 8th grade parents: The deadline to register for the 8th grade Washington DC trip has passed and the planning for the trip has begun! Our next step will be a student-only roommate selection meeting which is scheduled for HIJH students on Friday, December 7th at 7 AM in the main gym. For other general trip information, please go to www.dctrip.info or contact Eric Brown (ebrown@hse.k12.in.us).

December PTO Meeting. The next PTO meeting will be Friday, December 7 at 9:30 AM at the school. All parents are invited to join us.
Panther Rewards. Kroger. HIJH families who link their Kroger card number to our school help earn our school money! When you use your Kroger card, a portion of the sale goes to our school. It’s an easy way to support the PTO without costing you (or your fuel points) anything! Go to kroger.com/communityrewards, click “I’m With An Organization…” then “Request Your Kroger Plus Card” and create an account or sign in. Find HIJH-PTO (WT583) and link your card to our account.
Amazon. Amazon is another simple way to help our school money. Go to HTTP://smile.amazon.com/ and type HSJH PTO under “supporting”. You will need to go to smile.amazon.com each time (rather than use the app)- saving it under bookmarks makes it easy to use.
Tyson Rewards and Box Tops. Keep clipping Box Tops and Tyson Rewards. Our next collection will be on December 12. Each student that brings in 10+ box tops/Tyson rewards OR a Kroger receipt showing at the bottom community rewards going to HIJH PTO gets a treat at lunch. Put all rewards in a baggie labeled with your student’s name, grade and teacher. Receipts need name, grade and 1st period teacher written on it. Contact Lisa Gruber with questions at gruber5@comcast.net.
Playground. On November 14, Mr. Tim Mankin, Becky Gerig and Laura Clark attended the HSE School Board meeting to present the HIJH proposed playground plans and to seek the $30,000 matching grant. The board unanimously voted to approve the matching grant. We are getting a playground spring of 2019! Thank you to everyone that has donated to the playground and supported PTO. Additionally, thank you to Mr. Mankin for all of his work to achieve this goal. We are able to have the basic playground, but it is not too late to be able to expand our plans. Please still consider donating if you have not. Donations can be made through https://tinyurl.com/HIJHPTO.
Sky Zone Jump to Donate. PTO is selling Sky Zone Jump passes. Complete the attached form and submit it with payment by December 14th. If you return the form with payment before December 7th, you’ll receive a free pair of sky socks! Passes are $15.00 for a one-hour jump pass. These passes make a nice holiday gift!
