If you have an idea that you would like to present to your fellow Illinois school librarians at this year’s AISLE conference, we’d love to hear from you. #wordsmatterCPS: The CPS Critical Cataloging Project
Thursday, March 17, 2022 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. 1 PDH
Location: Zoom
CPS is working to adjust the subject headings and keywords that are used to locate resources in our catalog. Some of these terms are historically racist, sexist, ableist, and heteronormative. The Critical Cataloging Project adjusts subject vocabulary to be representative of the lived experiences of our students. By changing problematic search terms such as “illegal alien”, “slaves” and other inflammatory language, metadata and search terminology should be representative of the students and communities in which we serve. Chicago Public Schools Libraries Team, in partnership with librarians, the Office of Equity, and city partners, is interested in impacting change across catalogs by advocating to and with organizations that control metadata, in order to develop marc records that are representative and inclusive. Join us in the conversation on how we can make metadata culturally responsive.
Member Fee: $10.00
Non-Member Fee: $15.00
