AUGUST BEGINS 12 MONTHS OF ADVOCACY
Not on social media but still want to participate in our 12 Months of Advocacy? Make your school community aware of what you do with a flyer, email to parents, mention in the school newsletter, or more! Be creative and get the word out! August's prompt is about literacy – a sample text: "Did you know your school librarian is a literacy advocate and helps students connect with books they want to read? What was one of your favorite summer books ?" Use photos (if allowed) and data to share your story!

The LBSS Endowment Fund is sponsoring another round of “Feed Your Need” grants this fall.
This grant is only available to school librarians who are AISLE members. AISLE members who are grant recipients will receive $1500 each to provide non-fiction materials to assist in meeting Common Core expectations for their school libraries. Applications will be accepted August 1-September 30. Applicants will be notified no later than November 15th. The application form, and guidelines including rubrics are available on the LBSS website:

AISLE CHAPTER NEWS
Due North Chapter: Join us for our first meeting of the 2022-2023 school year. This meeting will be social so we can get to know each other and decide how Due North can best support us. There will not be a live streaming option since we will be in public.
We will be meeting on Tuesday, September 13 at 4:30 pm at Austin's, 481 Peterson Rd in Libertyville. We'll plan to be on the patio, which is covered so we should be good regardless of the weather. Please RSVP at your earliest convenience to duenochapter@aisled.org so we can get a table large enough.

The Learning Technology Center is hosting #DigLitCon, a one-day virtual conference centered on digital literacy. National and state edtech leaders will help educators, coaches, library media specialists, and admin support students in becoming productive, ethical, and empathetic digital citizens. Session strands include Information & News Literacy, Visual Literacy, Digital Communication, Digital Tattoos, Ethical Use of Digital Resources, Digital Citizenship, Media Literacy, and Computer Literacy. The State of Illinois General Assembly’s passage of House Bill 376 in April 2021, known as the TEAACH Act (Teaching Equitable Asian American Community History), marks Illinois as the first state to mandate the teaching of Asian American history in K-12 schools, starting with 2022-2023 school year. At the University of Illinois, a group of scholars and experts have developed a pilot series of four online professional development (PD) modules, to provide some guidance and resources for Illinois teachers and librarians to incorporate Asian American history in their curriculum and materials. FAMILY READING NIGHT – November 17, 2022
Continues ILA’s iREAD Theme: Read Beyond the Beaten Path. The Secretary of State
established Family Reading Night, as an evening to set aside when families can stay at home
and read together or visit their schools, public libraries, or literacy providers to participate in
creative programs to “Read Together, Grow Together.” If your school did not receive materials or did not receive enough materials, both posters and bookmarks can be downloaded and printed from the website. SPANISH bookmarks are also available for download!
LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE – Entry deadline December 15, 2022
A statewide reading and writing promotion. Students in grades 4 – 12 are invited to read a
book of their choice, reflect on it, and write a personal letter to its author explaining the impact
this work had on them. Students can enter individually, or through school, library, and youth
organizations. The 2023 forms are available online as well as a Teacher Guide. Those teachers who work the Teacher Guide into their curriculum say they do appreciate it and find that both they and their students get more from the program.
READ FOR A LIFETIME – The 2022-2023 Booklist is posted on the website.
A statewide reading program that targets high school students. Illinois high school students
who read from the annual list of 25 titles receive a certificate signed by Illinois Secretary of
State, Jesse White. Blind or visually impaired students may work with their local Read for a Lifetime coordinator to substitute those titles unavailable in Braille or Talking Books.
NATIONAL BOOK FESTIVAL – September 3, 2022: The Library of Congress is inviting libraries, schools and community centers across the country to host National Book Festival Watch Parties. Working with organizations across the country ensures that the this truly is a “National” Book Festival! Three stages at the 2022 National Book Festival will be livestreamed at https://loc.gov/bookfest.
IRC is accepting concurrent session proposals for the March 9-10, 2023 conference “Revolution: A change is gonna come” until September 1, 2022. Proposals are encouraged for small group sessions which will be scheduled for 60 minutes.
Call for Program Proposals for IYSI!
The Illinois Youth Services Institute (IYSI) Planning Committee is accepting program proposals for the March 2023 conference. Youth and Teen Librarians, please consider sharing your knowledge, expertise, and exuberance for programming, collaborations, and library services for youth. Professionals serving youth from public libraries, schools, after-school programs, museums, etc. are invited to attend and present. Additional information, including how to submit a program proposal, is available on the ILA website.

These librarians and their administrators all provided evidence that demonstrates an exemplary program and reflects the library standards supported by AISLE and the Illinois State Board of Education. The award will be presented to the School Libraries at upcoming school board meetings and they will also be recognized at the annual AISLE Conference on November 4, 2022.
