FROM THE STATE LIBRARY
- SCHOOL DISTRICT LIBRARY GRANT - the FY2023 School District Library Grant will open mid-August and remain open until October 15, 2022. The FY21 Expenditure Report will be due as part of the grant package.
- FAMILY READING NIGHT – this is an annual statewide event held the third Thursday in November to encourage families to spend quality time reading together. This year's date is November 17, so start planning your in-person or virtual Family Reading Night programs now! Need programming ideas? Idea sheets are available on the website.
- LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE – is a statewide reading and writing promotion. Students in grades 4–12 are invited to read a book of their choice, reflect on it, and write a personal letter to its author explaining the impact this work had on them. The entry deadline is December 15, 2022. New entry forms will be posted this fall. A teaching guide is available at the Illinois Center for the Book website.
- NATIONAL BOOK FESTIVAL – an annual literary event that brings together best-selling authors and thousands of book fans for author talks, panel discussions, book signings and other activities. The 2022 National Book Festival will be held Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. There will also be virtual programs available. Consider making world renowned authors available to your students by participating in these programs. At the Roadmap to Reading area, each state center affiliate highlights an author from their state on a Great Reads List. The Illinois Center for the Book will be highlighting children’s/youth author: Joelle Charbonneau and her book, VERIFY, and adult author: Nnedi Okorafor and her book, NOOR. For news, author updates and more, make sure you subscribe to the blog.
- READ FOR A LIFETIME - is a statewide reading program that targets high school students and rewards them for their efforts. Any student who reads at least four books from the annual list of 25 titles, receives a certificate signed by the SOS at the end of the school year. The 2022-2023 List can be found here.
- ILLINOIS READS – a program of the Illinois Reading Council for all ages that highlights Illinois authors and illustrators. Consider adding the school age books by authors who presently live or have lived in the Land of Lincoln to your reading lists.
- ISL GRANT PROGRAMS - an email notice has been sent to all grant recipients (regardless of type of grant) with remaining grant funds on the books. This notice simply encourages grantees to spend the money and reminds of reporting deadlines. If the grant funds are not spent, they will be lost, and for example, ARPA and LSTA funds must be returned to the Federal Government.
